An important part of that experience comes from our dedicated team, especially our talented Event Manager, Alma Matehuala. We sat down with her to learn more about her journey, philosophy, and what makes weddings at The Grand 1401 so special.
Q: What inspired you to you to become an event manager?
A: I’ve always been the go-to in my family when planning parties; so I’m naturally drawn to creating beautiful and memorable events. It’s something I’ve always loved doing.
Q: How long have you been with The Grand 1401, and what led you here?
A: I’ve been working at The Grand since 2015 and became an event manager in 2021. My journey with The Grand began in 2014 when I was working at a nonprofit and was searching for a venue for our graduation party. I instantly fell in love with the building and the ballrooms. The event manager at the time noticed how much I admired the space and offered me a part-time job.
Q: What is your philosophy when it comes to managing events?
A: My philosophy is that the focus should always be on our client and not whats convenient for us or anyone else besides our client.
Q: What are some common challenges you face, and how do you handle them?
A: One common challenge is dealing with unprofessional vendors. We currently have an open vendor policy, couples don’t always hire the best options. In these situations, we often have to step in and find better solutions. We highly encourage using reputable vendors.
Q: Can you share a memorable story from one of the weddings you’ve managed?
A: Jill and Connor’s wedding in 2023 stands out. They came to us just three months before their wedding, so we had to put everything together quickly. I told them what we needed to do to fulfill their goals, and we accomplished it. It was a hectic but a rewarding experience.
Q: What advice would you give to couples who are just starting to plan their wedding?
A: The location you select is very important, so make sure you choose wisely! It sets the tone for everything else.
Q: What makes The Grand 1401 stand out as a wedding venue? Why should couples choose us?
A: Our venue is a 100-year-old building listed on the California Historic Register. It’s truly a time capsule, offering a unique and grand experience that’s one of a kind.
